Rosemary is a relative

Rosemary is a relative to the mint family and the name is derived from its Latin origin to mean “dew of the sea.” Rosemary is very common in Mediterranean cuisine and has somewhat of a bitter astringent taste to it. While that is true it compliments oily foods very nicely. A tisane can be made from the Rosemary leaves and that is also very popular when cooking.

First it is burned and then added to a BBQ to flavor various foods. Sage, unlike many other herbs has a high nutritional value to it and is rich in iron, calcium, and vitamin B-6 and is more nutritional in its dried form rather than fresh. Rosemary should be harvested just as you are going to use it because it truly loses its flavor once dried. Gardner’s swear that if you plant some Rosemary plants in and around your garden, the Rosemary will fend off moths, beetles, and carrot flies.

Older Europeans loved Rosemary and believed that it improved memory and also used it as a symbol of remembrance and was often tossed into fresh graves before they were buried over. Traditionally it has been said that Rosemary, left untrimmed, would grow for thirty three years where it will reach the height of Christ when he was crucified. Many would also place sprigs of Rosemary underneath their pillows to ward of evil and nightmares. Often the wood that comes from the stems of the Rosemary plant was used to make musical instruments. Remember that people back then liked to utilize every piece of something as not to waste. Today, many wreaths are made from Rosemary as a symbol of remembrance.

Today, Rosemary is still used for many things besides cooking as it is in potpourris, air fresheners, shampoos, and cosmetics. There has also been scientific evidence that Rosemary works very well as a memory stimulant. Rosemary has also shown some cancer prevention properties in animals. But further Rosemary has shown a strong relationship in relaxing muscles, and to soothe stomach upset as well as menstrual cramps. The main thing to remember when using Rosemary for this purpose is that if you use too much it can actually cause a counter effect.

When made into a tea it is ingested for calming nerves and anxiety and as an antiseptic. Rosemary when used as a tea many people find to taste very good. Making the tea from Rosemary is quite simple actually, just pour boiling water over the leaves and steep for 10-15 minutes. A little sugar can be added by you should not add any cream. A few sprigs can be added to oils and vinegars to flavor the products which add a nice taste for cooking.

When used cosmetically it can lighten and tone human hair and when mixed with equal parts of shampoo it has been known to strengthen hair too. It also makes for a nice additive in hot bath water. Rosemary is still used quite commonly today however more so for cooking than anything else.

Ginkgo Biloba

Ginkgo is one of the oldest tree species that are alive and the leaves are one of the most studied leaves in clinical settings today. Ginkgo Biloba is an herbal form of medicine and in Europe and The United States is one of the biggest sellers. Many traditional medicines contain Ginkgo and are used for enhancing memory and to treat circulatory disorders. Scientific studies all support and validate these claims. Newer evidence shows that Ginkgo might very well be effective in treating decreased blood flow to the brain, especially in the elderly. There are two types of chemicals in Ginkgo leaves, flavonoids and terpenoids, which are thought to have very strong antioxidant properties resulting in aiding those who have Alzheimer’s disease.

While the Ginkgo plant is still in tree form, it produces fruit that is not edible; inside of the fruit are seeds that are poisonous to humans. Most of the studies that are currently being conducted on Ginkgo are being done on the leaves of the Ginkgo (GBE). Although many components of the Ginkgo tree have been studied only two have been directly related to the big success of Ginkgo, as mentioned above. This is why Ginkgo is showing a much more structured relationship with treatment of Alzheimer’s and Dementia. Because Ginkgo is so effective in improving blood flow to the brain and because of its antioxidant properties, the evidence that Ginkgo can help these patients is extremely promising.

It is suggested that Ginkgo truly can improve cognitive functions such as thinking, learning, and memory, improve activities of daily living and social behavior, and lessen the feelings of depression. Further studies are showing that the flavonoids can also help with retinal problems, people with circulatory problems in their legs, memory impairment, and tinnitus. Many doctors are recommending Ginkgo for treatment or discomfort associated with altitude sickness, asthma, depression, disorientation, headaches, high blood pressure, erectile dysfunction, and vertigo.

Ginkgo may also reduce the side effects of menopause, osteoporosis, and cardiovascular disease. The option of Ginkgo has a lot more appeal these days then the options of prescription medication which has unpleasant side effects. Children under the age of 12 should not use Ginkgo and in adults it usually takes about 4-6 weeks before you will see any significant results. There has been a relationship developing between Ginkgo as an anti aging aid since it is such a powerful antioxidant that wards off the free radials.

It is very common and becoming even more so for healthy people to include Ginkgo as an herbal supplement on a daily basis for better concentration and enhanced memory. People claim that in general they feel that Ginkgo reduces any mental fatigue that daily life has a tendency to bring forth. Many men are taking Ginkgo to improve impotence as well as increase fertility. The Chinese have used Ginkgo Biloba for many years and have found great success with it so it seems that they might be on to something here because this herbal remedy looks like it going to be around for a very long time.

If someone says Oregano, it is likely that you will think in terms of cuisine. You would be right as most people do think of Oregano is sauces and so forth. However, there are actual medicinal properties to Oregano as well. Oregano makes a luscious cup of savory tea that works well for gas, indigestion, bloating, coughs, urinary problems, bronchial problems, headaches, and swollen glands and to induce and regulate a woman’s menstrual cycle. Others swear that is can cure fevers, diarrhea, vomiting, and same jaundice.

In the capsule form the leaves are dried and then crushed and placed into the empty capsule shell. Further, even others use the dried leaves by crushing them and adding just enough water to create a paste like substance and use it for a cream to apply for arthritis, itchy skin, sore muscles, and swelling. For a relaxing and soothing bath use Oregano leaves in the bath water. Finally, some people make Oregano oil and claim it helps rid toothaches.

In Jamaica people burn Oregano scented incense to ward off coughs and other respiratory distresses. Oregano has been used in ancient Greece and many other places across the globe where people have found a different use for Oregano besides cooking. Oregano is a perennial herb that is relative to the mint family and it is a very important culinary herb that is used in a lot of Greek and Italian cuisines. For cooking purposes it is the leaves that are used and while some like nothing but a fresh Oregano sprig, most will agree that the dried Oregano is much more flavorful.

Especially in Italian cooking you will notice a distinct relationship between the uses of Oregano in combination with Basil. The two always seem to create the perfect marriage especially in a tomato sauce. Oregano is also used on many vegetable dishes as well as a seasoning on various meats. The Greeks would never consider cooking with Oregano in their pantry. The famous Greek salad boasts its flavor of Oregano. No one could imagine eating a piece of pizza without a taste of Oregano added to it.

Oregano is commonly mistaken for Marjoram as the plants look very similar. Outside of the kitchen Marjoram and Oregano are best friends and do a lot together. The pair has quite plentiful properties in the areas of antioxidants and antibacterial. Together they are not only a great combination for flavoring food but also for preserving it too. Because both of their oils are perfumery they are placed in many different soaps and lotions. They are also used in combination for many potpourris and home décor.

There is no denying that Oregano has been around since ancient times both in and out of the kitchen. It had many medicinal properties then and it still does now. It was used in the kitchen and it is still used there now so those from ancient times started a tradition that is still followed to this day. Oregano’s uniqueness is fully utilized in many different ways and will be for years to come.

ER or clinic for medical?

If you need medical assistance, you should go to the emergency room of the nearest hospital, a clinic for medical or should you call your doctor and make an appointment? You need to know what needs to be done before requiring medical intervention. Let’s take a look at that.

There is a difference between having a cough or a sore foot and suffering from severe chest pains. Need to let the symptoms of your health problem will help determine whether you need the ER or clinic for medical (known as urgent care centers in some areas). If you believe that the condition is severe or life threatening then you shouldn’t go into a clinic but must immediately call 911 or call an ambulance. If someone is there with you when the problem occurs, then find your way to the emergency room without delay. Time is of the essence, when there is a medical emergency.

Seriously, just how long will it take to heal? A thorough examination of healing-true healing

Q: “I have worked with a homeopath now for 2 years and are still healthy. How long does it take to heal with homeopathy? I thought by now they would be healed. ”

With classical homeopathy, goals is “cure”-means that there will be no symptoms of an illness and, consequently, no disease. How homeopathic healing differs from any other forms of healing modality, including other natural health services and care, I will discuss here some of the “things” that one needs to keep in mind when working with a classical homeopath for healing.

What is classical homeopathy?

The average person is not aware that there are different types of homeopathic doctors-so I feel this must be clarified so as to avoid confusion. In fundamental terms, a classical homeopath (aka Hahnemannian homeopath) practices according to the original “laws” of homeopathy, those established by Dr. Samuel Hahnemann several centuries ago (Bhatia, January 2007). The main law of homeopathy, in fact, the first law is: “high mission and only a doctor is to restore the sick to health care, as it is called (an aphorism).

Classical homeopaths usually use a homeopathic medication at a time, one that is chosen based on the individual characteristics of the person.

A contemporary homeopath usually does not work towards healing (“cure”)-work with managing the symptoms of the disease with homeopathic medicines. Often use the combination remedies (5 or more known remedies to help with the symptom). Remedy selection is based on the disease, not the individual. Healing does not often occur when combination remedies are used.

What is true healing?

I also believe that “true healing” needs to be clarified, as most people don’t know that healing actually is. When surveyed, most people believe an absence of symptoms is edited or that they have healed. However, people believe they are healthy, even if they have a disease so long as the disease is not causing symptoms. An example is the person with arthritis who take pain medications per day; until you are in pain, they do not have arthritis in their minds. Another example is a person who takes an antibiotic for an infection. Once you clear the infection, often the person believes they are cared for until it returns the infection. When the infection returns, believe that it is a new infection, not a remnant of the previous one.

True healing, according to Hahnemann’s Organon, is the complete removal and destruction of the disease in its whole extent “. Recurrent infection or arthritis is cured if it returns or remains to some degree.

Working toward the cure

According to Hahnemann’s aphorism States: “the highest ideal of cure is rapid restoration, permanent and health, or removal and annihilation of the disease in its whole extent, more reliable and more harmless, easily comprehensible principles.”

Classical homeopaths need to find the best remedy only out of all the remedies available to begin the healing process and continue the process until complete healing occurs. Take a look at the qualifications:

Quick moving, acting, or occurring with great speed. How long does it take to heal in the fastest way? Each person usually has a length of time that they will be set aside for recovery; After that time, if the person has not yet healed, they begin to look elsewhere for healing (or give up and accept their illness as permanent). But who can put a time line on healing? Although a homeopath (or any person) was not exactly how long anyone has a path of healing, they know that their focus is to make the quick trip possible and as sweet and as possible.

Dessert: not harsh or severe; delicate and soft. A homeopath can suggest a homeopathic remedy that can cure a person quickly, but the remedy should be nice and do not harm in any way.

I like an analogy used by another homeopath (talk by Dr. Manish Bhatia second aphorism Hahnemann):

“I suppose you have to go as far as to say about 100 km’s apart. There are many ways/means to reach b a. You can go walking and probably it will take more than two days. The joints are also going very badly. You can use the cycle and will cover the distance of a day or more. There is a lot of physical work-it is not easy for most of us to ride a cycle for a 100 km (easy) you can choose a scooter or a bike and you will cover the distance in two hours.

Pizza-examples from different parts of the world

Gambar sisip 1Everyone assumes that Italy is the birthplace of pizza, but may not realize that other parts of the world continue to have an influence on this popular dish. The cakes are different depending on geographical location, so when you head out of town, don't be surprised if the dish ordered looks a bit differently than you expected.

The Neapolitan

From Naples, this pizza is the basis of most modern day cakes. At first, it was a dish of salsa, but toward the end of 1880, when Queen Margrethe came to visit the Royal Palace. With the addition of cheese, transition in modern-day cake called the Daisy. Today, the Daisy includes the crust, tomato sauce and includes Basil and mozzarella. Thus three colors found in tricolor: red, green and white.

Chicago Style

Everyone has seen a pizza pan, but not everyone has tried one. Be sure to get your fork and knife to try and take a slice. Rumor has it that the dish came as the result of a restaurateur tasting a bad enchilada. He chose to make the pizzas instead but has some concerns about how insubstantial meal replacement is done. A change has been made and the crust was thickened with some extra cheese added to make it look bigger and so higher.

Lahma Bi Ajeen

Chances are that this is not going to be found at your local pizzeria. The translation means meat with pasta and this is exactly what you will get when you order. It is from Lebanon and customers order it with onions, cumin and yogurt. Minced lamb is the most heard of the dish.

The Calzone

The Italians took the pizza to a new level with the calzone. Here are all the traditional ingredients are included. Instead of serving them over the crust, everything is enclosed in the Earth's crust. An edge is folded over at the other, making almost shaped like the moon. The calzone is cooked and usually requires a knife and fork.

The Stromboli

The origin of the Stromboli has been in question for years, but most agree that started in the United States. While often linked to Cabral, is actually something completely different. Instead of a pizza, is considered to be a sandwich. The calzone is a folded over version of a cake, the Stromboli is rolled versions of torta. Too should be eaten with a knife and fork.

Natural remedies for flu

As the world braces for a potential avian flu pandemic in the near future, people everywhere are wondering what they can do to protect themselves. As we’ve all seen during the flooding of New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina, we cannot expect the Government to handle a widespread emergency effectively. There are only small shops of Tamiflu available, and its effectiveness during a bird flu pandemic is questionable. While conventional medicine does not offer a lot of options to treat viruses, some natural remedies are known to have antiviral effects. These remedies were often used for centuries with little or no side effects. There are ways we can learn about now in order to strengthen ourselves in the event of an epidemic. These remedies may be useful also for the common flu that we deal with every year.

During the last pandemic in 1918, India lost 18 million people for flu. The grass that has been credited with the end of the epidemic in India at that time was andrographis paniculata. Andrographis has been used traditionally in China and India for viral infections and respiratory tract. Its effectiveness is supported by modern research. Andrographolides in this herb can enhance immune system function. Can increase the production of white blood cells, activate the lymphatic system and stimulate interferon production by the cells of the body. Interferon kills viruses and stops their growth. This herb can help our immune system fight more effectively against viruses. Andrographis is often combined with Siberian ginseng to boost his immune system enhancing effects. This herb has proven to be effective in fighting bacterial pneumonia and viral, what are the complications that often follow the flu or colds.

Another herb that has been traditionally used to treat viral conditions is isatis. It was commonly used in Asia recently during the outbreak of SARS (sudden acute respiratory syndrome) who lived. It is also used for people with other viral diseases, and AIDS and hepatitis c.

An herb commonly used here in the United States, elderberry, has antiviral effects, which makes it useful for treating colds and flus. Elderberry virus prevents the cells of our body, making it difficult for them to invade and start replication.

The herbal formula, Gan Mao Ling, is frequently used to prevent colds and flu at the first signs of an outbreak. Is more useful when taken right when a person begins to feel chilled and feverish. It also has been shown to reduce the duration of influenza, once the person is already sick. Yinchiao San is a formula that can help towards the beginning of a cold or flu, just when a person starts feeling feverish with a sore throat.

Many essential oils used in aromatherapy have antiviral effects. Eucalyptus oil, lemon oil, ravensara oil, geranium oil and Thyme oil have antiviral properties. These oils can be used in a blend of massage diluted in a carrier oil, or can be found in an oil burner, so you breathe in antiviral oils through the lungs. A few drops can also be added to bath water. Essential oils are the most powerful natural medicine infection fighters. Do not discount their power simply because they smell beautiful.

Digestive enzymes when taken between meals, are absorbed through the gut into the bloodstream. These enzymes can help to break down proteins that consist of viruses and can help destroy or inactivate them.

As you can see, there are many natural methods to increase our strength and helps fight influenza and other viral diseases every day for common ailments and also in case of a pandemic emergency.

Dental health: Stick your tongue and say-Ouch!

Raised as a Baby Boomer, I remember our generation accused of go wild with our socially unacceptable fashion statements. Young men with shoulder length hair and young women wearing hot pants shocked the nation’s sensibilities.

It has been suggested between the generation of our parents who we never would amount to anything with our rebel ways. Yet we have-we are honest community members, parents and even respected professionals such as dentists and oral hygienists.

And, while we thought that we had done everything, it came to pass that the generation of now-GenX-has set a trend that drops the jaw of even the boldest Baby Boomer.

Picking up from where they left the first Egyptians, Greeks and Romans, the GenX has embraced the art oral and body piercing and tattoos as a way to distinguish them by the institution.

Why is this mode of expression of identity-especially the pierced tongue-creating such concern among parents and adults that include the American Dental Association? We Baby boomers are just a bunch of hypocrites self-expression?

Okay, I confess to being picky on oral or dental pain. Makes my knees weak just to catch a glimpse of a barbell impaled language in the mouth of a teenager.

In all honesty, though, that is not the only issue at stake. Today we know a lot more about body piercing that the ancients did. Dentists and other health professionals know that oral piercings is, to borrow an expression, risky business.

In fact, the ADA, a group of dentists that set professional standards for dentists in the United States, is officially against any type of oral piercing.

Languages are generally pierced by passing a needle through the third cable language front, from top to bottom, usually without an anesthetic. The American Dental Association warns that if a blood vessel is the path of the needle during piercing, severe and can cause damage to the nerve and/or bleeding difficult to control.

The most common symptoms after oral piercings include pain, an increased flow of saliva and gingival tissue injury. The swelling is also common and dentists warn that in extreme cases, a badly swollen tongue can actually close the airway and prevent breathing.

The American Dental Association mentions the risk of infection because any mouth just naturally contains millions of bacteria that might be set on the site of the piercing.

Children’s Hospital Boston staff goes further to explain that there are external infections that can be introduced as well. These infections have names that we recognize, such as hepatitis, HIV, Lockjaw and yeast. The staff recognizes whether the piercer wash their hands and use sterile equipment and gloves, and if the pierced tongue is receiving appropriate treatment, the risk of infection is lower (but still exists).

According to dental health professionals to CHB, infections caused by bacteria entering the sting of piercing can also occur later, even after the piercing has healed.

Other risks include Keloids (thick scars at the piercing site), dental damage (chipped and broken teeth), choking on loose jewels and allergic reactions (especially for certain types of jewelry).

As a parent of Baby Boomer children GenX my concern is less with any negative characterization of people with pierced tongues and more with the maintenance of next generation healthy until they can reach adulthood.

I would advise anyone over the age of eighteen years, including my children, that body piercing is a big decision. I would encourage them to take time to consider the risks, bearing in mind that they can always change their mind or wait if they are unsure.

After understanding the risks, if you decide to get a piercing, I would like to emphasize the importance of selecting a reputable piercer, making sure they have a certificate on the wall that says that the piercer is registered with your application, a professional piercer organization that sets safety rules for the people who do the piercing.

In addition, of course they should buy good jewelry, keep the site clean and away from irritating materials, see their dental health professional regularly-and immediately if there are symptoms of an infection!

As a former wild and crazy mini skirt wearing now responsible yet hip MOM, how he would react if I discovered a barbell in the language of my child under the age of 18 years?
